That's right, I went there.

As if the first Motown cover album wasn't rotten enough, he had to
make a second. If anyone here actually thinks that this man has an
ounce of talent, they should slap themselves firmly across the face. A
Toni Braxton duet? Why not just invite Kenny G over to cuddle infront
of the fire?

Don & Walt used to have standards. Now they're going to tour with a
Soft AC hack?!?! This is very very sad.

Hang on, I think it was the 'making of AJA' where Michaels name came up.
As I recall, as the pair refered to him, they were laughing.
Not in a Ray Charles respect type of laughing.

Personally, he was the right vocalist at the time, 30 years ago.
Nostalgia trip?

I'm trying to decide wether I will go see the Dan this summer or not.
They're playing a venue here that is notorious for having horrible
sound. Plus I don't think I can handle a set of MM originals/MM Motown
covers.

I am very tempted though...

For now I'm watching some really awesome vids of Keith Carlock/Bernie
Purdie/Steve Gadd/etc. on drummerworld.com

I really don't understand why they don't let Keith go off. This one 14
minute solo he does is beyond amazing (i'm stealing all kinds of
ideas). So anyway, with that in mind, why do we get two albums of boom
boom tap? It must be cuz the boyz are off the drugs.

Anyway, back to my original subject. I really don't hate Michael, its
just that I feel he's a sell out. And as of late, I feel that the boys
are selling out a bit too. Pity huh?

But don't mind me, I'm just going through a severe depression since
Phil Hendrie announced that he's retiring from his radio gig.

I know what you mean about Carlocks drumming on the new one,

I don't think he ever comes off the snare !

its very sad and a waste of his talents - nice easy gig working for the
'Dan'

Maybe the Dan are becoming too musak ?

Oh, btw, has it even occurred to any of you that because MM is touring
with SD, you're going to get to hear some of their best collaborative
stuff, including Kid Charlemagne, Peg, Bad Sneakers, Black Friday, I
Got the News, Time Out of Mind and the redefined Pretzel Logic,
performed the way they should be?

Who knows what new charts might be written in anticipation of having
Mike's vocal chops available once again?

This is the equivalent of the Second Coming,* to me.

In other words, this is as exciting as if Larry Carlton were guest

When did liking Michael McDonal become politically incorrect?
I don't get the gripe - I like the voice and Motown 2 is a good

So I guess now I should slap myself firmly across the face...
Could anybody please elaborate why the man doesn't have an ounce of
talent and why he is a Soft AC hack? I'd really like to be

It's not politically incorrect. I just don't like the guy. He did some
good backup vocals 30 years ago. Since then he's written some really
sub-par yacht rock.

I'm gonna throw the ball back in your court my friends, you are
displeased with my "hating on" Michael Mcdonald... that’s fine. Have
you actually heard ALL his albums??? ALL OF THEM??? HAVE YOU?

I HAVE... AND THEY SUCK

SUCK SUCK SUCK

Now I understand that everyone has different taste, but Michael
Mcdonald is fairly tasteless. You're free to like him. Personally, I
think he's a sellout. I thought that before the Motown albums, and
then they sealed the deal. It's bad enough I have to hear that shit on
the Sprint adds. Furthermore, it is my opinion that Michael Mcdonald
has quite possibly the most irritating singing voice ON EARTH. I'd
rather hear someone that is tone deaf sing. Diane, you'll do fine.

And no, he's not a BAD musician. I'd say he's either unwilling or
unable to write a good song anymore. MM blew his wad on Takin' It to
the Streets and Livin' on the Fault Line... his first solo album was
mediocre, and the rest (in my opinion) are all frisbees.

...and that's all I have to say about it.

I am with diane: Like or dislike some one' s talent and skill, but if
you can sell a few thousand tickets for people to see you is a
testament of some kind.

The world is littered with brilliantly talented people who are
incredibly obscure and irrelevant, of intrest to themselves and their
family or friends.

Check out all the Beethoven and Mozart fans.

Putting bodies in the seats and selling CDs is essential for the artist
and their fans.

Popularity is not the only factor, but it means a heck of a lot more
than slagging someone for being able to entertain thousands of people
at a time.

Hyperbole begets hyperbole.

It's enough already. Point taken and argued well and loudly. Nothing
left now except the insults and catcalls.

Here are the simple facts:

The SD homepage has been updated touting the joint tour.

They are using words like "reunion" and referring to MM as a bandmate
from the 70s.

The news release reads: Five-time Grammy winner MICHAEL MCDONALD'S
distinctively soulful voice first emerged in the 1970's as a vocalist
in Steely Dan.

All the references are positive. It's happening. And a whole lot of
fans are really excited about it because we all have this big hardon
for that early and remarkable body of work with all the great session
players and Michael McDonald's backing vocals.

As I mentioned earlier, there is certainly potential to perform Kid
Charlemagne, Peg, Bad Sneakers, Black Friday, I Got the News, Time Out
of Mind and the redefined Pretzel Logic--7 songs that get me hot.

A cynic might call this nostalgia. I call it pushing ahead with brass
balls. Here are several men in their mid-to-late 50s getting back
together to see if they can still make music that good. And I know they
can, unlike dozens of other reuniting bands who have blown their wads
long ago.

Donald proved he still has amazing vocal strength on Morph. Mike has
only gotten better with age, but he's still got it, too. Steely Dan:
doesn't play well with others, as demonstrated in the Hall of Fame
induction performance--GHASTLY!!! with Paul Shaffer and ... Kid Rock or
some fucken asshole? What a mess. But they DO play well with Mike.

Anyway, it's on, it's happening, and no amount of detracting will
change it, so can we let it rest already? C, you may loathe MM, but
that isn't going to stop the rest of us from scoring a big win this
summer with the double bill. And if you attend, I'm sure it will be a
win-win.

This is a dream-come-true for me, so no amount of carping about whether
or not MM has sold out can penetrate the tremendous shine on me. This
is once in a lifetime. I never thought this would happen. I'm psyched
beyond expression.

I'm sorry folks, this is a Steely Dan newsgroup. It is intended for
the discussion of Steely Dan, and Steely Dan related shit. No one has
to agree with me, I don't have to agree with anyone. I don't have to
parse my words, and I don't need to avoid saying things that aggravate
those with thin skin.

Not all I say here is negative, however I am prone to speak up about
things that disturb me. I may not always be right, but damn it, I'm
going to say what's on my mind, wouldn't you?

You may consider me to be a nuisance, but honestly, what harm is being
done? We're all adults here, I'm merely giving my opinion as a fan of
this group... and because a number of you here disagree with my
opinions, you want to shut me up. I would never try to do that to any
of you.

And you have the audacity to think that I really give two shits
whether or not someone on here has a tantrum and blocks me. HAH!

songs. You know he'll play the 12 good ones on this tour. Then he joins
SD and performs those great tunes he did on record with them 30 years

I agree with Diane. This is no different than if Larry Carlton was

LOL I'll agree with you on not trusting anyone named Cedric. However,
most people named Cedric in America are black... so that could come

Anyway, as I said earlier, he did pen some good songs while he was
working with the Doobs. But since then, look at his solo career...
don't take my word for it, read the reviews... or just listen to the
albums. No one yet here has answered my previous question. Have you
actually listened to ever single Michael Mcdonald album? I have, and
I've heard every single damn Steely Dan recording. You are trying to
tell me that I "don't get Steely Dan". Sure I do, you just feel
threatened because someone has a differing opinion... that's no reason
to get your knickers in a knot. You want everyone to agree and be
happy and artificial.

And no this is not the equivalent of Larry Carlton guesting on the
tour. Larry Carlton has released some damn good music in the past 20
years. Michael Mcdonald has released nothing but schlock in the past
20 years...

Here's the guy's last three albums...

Since 1982's If that's what it takes, Motown II and the Christmas
album are the only two MM albums to get good reviews. Since 1982, he's
released 5 frisbees, horrible sales, horrible reviews... and more
importantly, I don't like them. And now what does he put out? Covers,
Covers... and more Covers. Why does he release so many cover albums?
Cuz he can't write a decent song no mo'.

While I admire your economy of words ("_______ SUCKS!!!"), I must point
out the obvious: Them's fighting words.

And you get what you give. "__________ sucks!!" can reasonably be
expected to elicit any one of the following reasoned responses:

* And so's your old man.
* YOU suck.
* Yo mama.
* Oh yeah? Come on over here and say that, modickah...
* Bite me.
* Fuck off and die.
* You're MEAN!!!
* Who the hell asked you?
* Yeah, but he's so cute...

More importantly, iIf you strike the king you must kill the king, so to
rant on about the king without delivering a fatal, indisputable blow is
to set yourself up for reprisals.

Of course, C, not everyone here knows what a truly special person you
are, except for me.

If MM truly sucks, you should be able to make a reasoned argument to
that effect. And since this newsgroup is populated largely by people
who not only appreciate, but understand great music, any such argument
would be considered fairly.

But you had to go there. I'm the same way when I detest something, or
something just angers the hell out of me for whatever reason. I hate
George Bush, but I have to stop screaming about it and do something
about it. It's the same thing, except George Bush never created any
beauty at all in his lifetime--unlike MM.

If you wanna approach people like that, you're gonna get the kind of
responses you've gotten here. Why bother?

I don't think it's important to express every single thought one has,
and especially not the most intense ones. That's where I get in

fare qualsiasi cosa poich, un biglietto verso vedere D'acciaio Dan OR
Sono una donna difettosa che fa qualche cosa vedere Steely Dan,
capisce?)
Anyway, I love you but you're such an ass, baby.

This is all about you.

HAH!
This is all about you.

Since I've been out of town, I've seen that Michael McDonald telephone
company commercial on TV about 1,045,353,256,233.25 times.

I didn't know CB radio personalities posted on this newsgroup?!?

=-o

My goodness, do you miss me that much? 3 weeks off the air, and
everyone goes nutter. The same goes for this usenet, I leave and it
all goes to hell.

Hey, did anyone ever figure out where to buy Rhymes?

That's right, I went there.
As if the first Motown cover album wasn't rotten enough, he had to
make a second. If anyone here actually thinks that this man has an
ounce of talent, they should slap themselves firmly across the face. A
Toni Braxton duet? Why not just invite Kenny G over to cuddle infront
of the fire?
Don & Walt used to have standards. Now they're going to tour with a
Soft AC hack?!?! This is very very sad.

And he's so awesome in those MCI commercials huh?

Maybe Don & Walt should consider advertising for Jack in the box, or
some type of protective undergarment.

Those horribly annoying MCI ads didn't damage Mike's credibility any
(I guess). And they still keep playing on TV, over and over and
over... somewhere someone is trying to drive me crazier.

Jesus, what a loser. I guess life must be brutally lonely for one
struggling musician in St. Petersburg. So Cedric, how is your hepatitis?

Is that the best you've got, sir? Who's the loser here? Hepatitis? No
sir, I am not of your ilk. I have a tad bit of class.

Since it seems you want to talk about me, my life is great. I guess
you could call me a "struggling musician", however music is simply a
hobby for me. It is not my main source of income, but gig money is
nice isn't it? Or would you know?

I have my little studio, and I enjoy going in and laying down some
simple tracks. I don't claim to be a virtuoso (when I'm sober) but I
enjoy myself and have a great time.

Do you enjoy your life? It seems you have nothing better to do than
call me a loser and accuse me of having diseases. Was that the high
point of your day? What does your day consist of? This morning I had
money to make, then I spent the rest of the day multitracking at the
studio with some friends.

As for the hepatitis... generally when people make accusations of that
nature, about people they've never met, they are "projecting". Have
you ever had an STD sir? I can honestly say I have not, but more to
the point, what the fuck does that have to do with Steely Dan?

Anyway, I do love some of MM's music, you see, I refused to drop the
subject since everyone made such a big messy fuss... that's just how I
am. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go pop Montreux Summit Vol 2
in the CD player and mellow out.

xoxo
